What is mindful breathing?

Mindful breathing is when you choose to take control of your breath by breathing in an intentional way. By teaching children how and when to breathe in a mindful way, we help them to develop the important skill of self-regulation.

By using this resource, you help a child to build a relationship with their breath; get to know it, play with it, and call it by its name, My Friend Breath. It is through establishing this connection with their breath that a child builds the foundation of their mindful breathing practice.

About the Book

My Friend Breath is a beautifully illustrated picture book for children 3 – 8 years old. The book explains how and why the breath is a supportive self-regulation strategy. Children learn how to use their friend Breath to calm uncomfortable emotions in an empowered way.

This is the first of seven learning guides in the My Friend Breath Superhero Training program. Each guide highlights a different aspect of the story and has a specific social-emotional learning focus. 

Presenting social-emotional learning as Superhero Training engages children and helps to maximize their participation.

The social-emotional learning focus of this guide is mindful breathing.

 

Here’s what is included in this Superhero Training:

  • Foundational information on mindful breathing - what it is, why it matters, how it is demonstrated throughout the story

  • A read-along script that includes clear and concise instructions for the adult on what to say (using kid-friendly language), what to ask (with suggested answers given), and what to do to teach each social-emotional skill
  • Comprehension Q&A, 6 online interactive flip cards, and audio activity to help check a child’s understanding of mindful breathing.

  • 8 online interactive games & puzzles, catering to different ability levels and featuring illustrations from the book to help make learning fun and engaging.

  • QR codes and clickable links for access easy to digital games.

  • A printable activity for entertaining and educational offline learning.

 

How to use this learning guide:

First, you’ll introduce mindful breathing using the read-along script and the companion book My Friend Breath.

Next, you’ll use the comprehension questions, online flip-cards, and listening activity to check the child’s understanding of the learning focus, and mindful breathing, and identify any points that would benefit from being revisited.

Then, it’s time to play! Children can use the QR Codes or clickable links for quick and easy access to the following online games to further consolidate their learning.

Superhero Training makes learning fun!

Children will be instantly engaged by the interactive online games. These games are loads of fun and educational as well, as they help to consolidate the SEL focus of mindful breathing.

Playing ‘memory’ has long been a favorite game for children. Adding an interactive online element and a specific learning focus, along with the amazing original illustrations from the book My Friend Breath, our mindful breathing memory games are sure to be much loved by a new generation of ‘memory game’ players.

And just when you thought memory games were the bees’ knees, we introduce the fun and competitive game of memory race!  In this interactive online game, players race against the clock to find a matching pair! This takes the memory game concept to a whole new level of engagement, while at the same time still reinforcing the focus of this learning guide, mindful breathing.

The games and puzzles cater to different ages and abilities and vary in difficulty from matching the same pictures, matching connecting aspects, and matching pictures to text. The different options provide children with the challenge of completing each level as they improve and learn.

Finally, you can print the coloring activity for engaging offline fun!
